Compare Sailing ChartersAbout This Guide
I built this after years working in charter and rental operations on coastal waters. Visitors consistently show up at the dock having booked the wrong experience — the wrong marina, the wrong vessel type, the wrong format for their group. This guide exists to help you understand the real differences before you book, so your day on the water goes the way you planned it.
Hilton Head has three distinct marina hubs — Shelter Cove, Broad Creek, and Harbour Town — and where you depart determines what you can reach. Shelter Cove gives direct access to Port Royal Sound. Broad Creek is quieter and better for inshore exploring. Harbour Town is scenic and best suited for sailing and sunset cruises. Matching the marina to your accommodation and experience type saves time and opens up more of the waterway.
A $35/hour skiff and a $109.99/hour pontoon are completely different experiences for different groups. Pontoons are stable and open — great for families and groups who want space. Center consoles are faster and better for dolphin watching or inshore fishing runs. Matching the vessel to your actual plans matters more than the hourly price difference.
Island Head operates from both Shelter Cove and Broad Creek — two separate marina locations serving different parts of the island. Outside Hilton Head runs kayak, boat, dolphin, and fishing operations out of Shelter Cove. Knowing which marina covers which operator and experience type helps you book the right location for your stay.
This guide features operators I'd feel comfortable recommending to a guest asking for advice at the dock — active, well-reviewed, and delivering what they advertise.
